Seeded 9th in the Internationale de Italia, Germany’s Angelique Kerber beat Alize Cornet in straight sets 6-2 6-3 to advance to the second round.

Kerber's defensive game was impenetrable behind the baseline, giving Cornet a lot of troubles. Though Cornet managed to put some resistance twice during the match, it wasn't enough to score an upset against Kerber. During the first set, Cornet held her serve to trail 2-3 but Kerber's solid ground strokes kept her nose in front. She held her serve again 40-0 to win the first set.

The second set follows the same pattern. Kerber leads again 3-1, before Cornet made a short comeback to trail at 2-3. But Kerber responded with solid winners and well-timed drop shots to derail Cornet. Cornet kept her hope alive by winning another game to trail at 3-5, but it didn’t stop the inevitable. Kerber served for the match and celebrated the win after Cornet’s service return landed on the net. Kerber will either meet Irina-Camelia Begu or Urszula Radwanska in the next round.

Angelique Kerber has been enjoying an excellent clay court season. She won back to back premier titles in  Charleston and Stuttgart before falling to Sam Stosur in Madrid.  Can she challenge the top seeds to win Rome title?
